The History Of Music Video's

1929- film called St. Louis Blues was initially released but was seen as one of the first music videos because it was a musical. In 1932, the song by Bessie Smith was released by itself as a promo.

1940- a musical by Disney called Fantasia was released which showed animated imagery to the sound of classical music.

1956- Tony Bennett performed a song whilst walking through Hyde Park in London this
may be considered one of the first proper music video.

1964- the beetles filmed their live performance of A hard day's night it then became quite common for artists to film their live performances as a music video.
Music artists started to become like brands.
Portable cameras became available and were not too expensive.

1970- Devo became one of the first bands to create their own music videos with their song secret agent man. This was happening during the pioneering compilation "The truth about devolution"

1975-Queen's music video for Bohemian Rhapsody was released and it completely changed music videos as it used performance with lots of effects.

1981- MTV was created to play music videos 24/7, the first video played was video killed the radio star by the Buggles.

One of the first to embrace the new technology was Michael Jackson, this was clearly seen in thriller. This video shows a plot in which makes the music video unique. Certain music videos were banned for various reasons such as relax by Frankie goes to Hollywood for having what was seen as sexual content in the 1980s and White lines by grandmasterflash which referred to drugs a lot. However modern music videos have a lot more sexual content and some do refer to drugs.

Goodwin: Goodwin discovered a lot of different key features in music videos which demonstrated a wide range of characteristics. These characteristics included:

  • Stadium Performance
  • Studio Performance
  • Location
  • Narrative Based
  • Concept Based
Goodwin discovered that a key feature of music videos consisted of many close ups of the artist  or actors in the performance. The reason this being is that the music industries want it to be a requirement that the artists are strongly featured within the music video. The reason this being is that they can make more sells if the artists are featured within the music video.
