Location Ideas

I have been looking into a range of different locations which link to the genre which I have decided to do. After exploring a few music videos, I have decided to look into some local areas which I can create some establishing shots.

The first place I looked at was the big open space underneath the M32 which has a very good set up in place. Using this location, I can rather have some filler shots which may include the actor to be strolling through this location, or I could actually use this as a main location shot and have my actor against a pillar preforming. The only problem is in this location is that natural lighting is very important so I will have to film during certain times within the week and also the ground is not level so may cause problems when setting up a tripod.

I also had some initial idea of setting up some shots in Eastville park along the main path to do some main shots where the actor could be walking towards the camera while it is still moving away from the actor. This location also includes a wide open field I can use to do some filler shots if it is required.
This image shows where I want to do the opening shot of an actor on a skateboard going around the lake. This could be set up by using a selfie stick attached to a phone filming the actor as they go around the pond. If not then I can use this location to maybe fit into a different type of shot even if it is for a couple of seconds.

We have also decided to look into the schools dance studio because we can control the lighting very effectively. Grime music normally has low-key lighting so by doing it in a dance studio we can set it up so that each actor involved is seen very clearly.

The Gaze

This is a Prezi which I created that discusses the male gaze and how the male gaze has been shaped and changed. It states what the male gaze theory is and it gives examples to show what type of videos are associated with the gaze.

Costume

Costume
Costume is a main thing to take into account when creating my music video. Costume can be important because in a certain genre your costume needs to appeal to the audience and also link to the song.
A good example of this is LMFAO and the all of the costumes in which they have in all of their different music videos. In each music
video their unique costumes stand out and therefore their costumes link to their group. That is why when you see the robot head you instantly know that it is  LMFAO. This became a symbol to their group.

When it comes to looking at the genre in which i have chosen, i have to look into a range of different styles of clothing to create the costumes. So by looking into more Eminem videos and other artists such as James Bay and Chris Brown, there are a lot of different styles which i can choose from when creating my music video. I have also had to analyse the colours in which all of the videos share, for example Eminem and James Bay's music videos both contain a lot of black and grey. They also wear clothing which links to the lyrics within the song and which always links to the lighting. If you look at a James Bay song he wears a lot of black and this is so he blends in with the low key lighting in which he uses which causes an outstanding affect because it makes the artist stand out even though the point is for him to blend in.

This image to the right shows how Eminem did not wear a costume and was just himself in a music video, but instead he made quite a few people get into costume to look like him. This is quite significant because they are all relevant to the song. Whereas in other music videos artists would wear clothes which represent a certain brand and promote it in which the public then see and then go for that type of style.

Music Video Styles

There are a wide range of different music video styles which can all create the same effect. The Genre in which i am deciding to pick is rap, so i have been researching into different music videos.

This music video is one example of the genre in which is more mainstream for the fact of which artists in which rap the song. Chris Brown is well known for his rap songs and due to working with Tyga before he knew this song could create some sort of success.

This music video is one of the first music videos to become successful from claymation in which shows the life of animation in the music video. It reached number 4 in the UK charts and was also second in the "top 20 music videos from the 80's". This music video also won quite a few awards and one of these awards was most experimental video which was a big risk a few years ago.

The narrative songs we had been shown was from well known artists such as Justin Timberlake "Cry Me A River". This music video had a deeper meaning in which was quite hard to notice. So with most music videos they would be just related to the aritst in some way or fit with the words. However in this music video each word as a different meaning and the video itself tells a story to the audience.

The other narrative based song we looked into was Drake "Find Your Love" which attracted a wide range of different audiences and this is what made this song successful. The shots in which was used all linked together well and they all managed to link with the lyrics within the beat which creates a good effect.

Pastiche is the imitation of the work of a film/ Televison show and it tends to be hard to believe and does not link to the lyrics which is what makes it unique in its own ways. One example of this is parody and they include songs such as "Another One Rides The Bus" by Weird Yankovic.
Another example of Pastiche is the song "Heart shaped box" by Nirvana.

30 second video analysis

30 Second video analysis: Eminem- Beautiful.

First shot of Eminem’s video “Beautiful”.  Within the first few shots of the video there is silence as Eminem explores the abandoned building. In my opinion i find these shots quite creative because it has an impact on its audience in a specific way. One main thing these shots do is make the audience ask questions such as why is that building so significant.

These two shots show Eminem walking into an abandoned building, these shots show within just seconds of each other but has a good effect in how they are are two different shot types. So you have got the mid shot on the left and then seconds after you have the long shot showing him entering this setting.

This shot continue from the previous shots and doing the same style from going from a mid to long shot. It also continues the silence, so therefore the audience are starting to wonder why the song has not really begun yet.

This shot now shows how he has a "private place" where he can be alone, so these shots as a hole tell a story because he is rapping about his past but he is telling the audience that his past is all around him and by the looks of it this place obviously used to mean somthing to him.

This 30 second analyisis shows a range of different shot types in which are all in the same setting but they all tell a different story.
These shots show that the setting is very important because it needs to link to its genre and to the lyrics in which the song holds.

By looking at this music video i can see what expectation in which this genre expects and i can accomplish this by looking at these different genres.

Tracking an artist through their careers.

Eminem

Eminem first got into hip hop music at age 9 after his parents had left him in which they were in a band of their own. He heard his first hip hop rap at age 9 in which was called reckless featuring Ice-T. At age 14 Mathers began to start rapping with his friend Mike Ruby; they adopted the names "Manix" and "M&M" in which later evolved into Eminem.

He used to sneak into different high schools and compete with students in rap battles during their lunch. On Saturday nights Eminem attended open mic rap battle competitions, in which he used his own raps, and to a lot of the audiences his versus did not make a lot of sense and the reason is that he had his own meanings hidden behind the words in which he knew only a certain amount of people could understand.

As Eminem's reputation begun to grow he was recruited by several rap groups to help him carry on growing; the first of these was the New Jacks. He was then signed to Jeff and Mark Bass' FBT Productions, in which they recorded his first debut album "Infinite".

This album had a main subject which was telling audiences on how much struggle he had when he was raising his daughter on such little money. During this period Eminem's rhyming style, primarily inspired by rappers NAS and AZ, lacked the comically violent slant for which he would later be known.

Eminem attracted more attention when he developed Slim Shady, a sadistic, violent alter ego. The character, "a drug-dealing, bloodthirsty thug who spits furious rhymes about murder, rape, drugs and living by the law of the urban jungle", allowed him to express his anger. In the spring of 1997 he recorded his debut EP, the slim shady EP, which was released that winter by Web Entertainment.

Eminem went to Los Angeles to compete in the 1997 He placed second, and Interscope Records staff in attendance sent a copy of the Slim Shady EP to company CEO Jimmy LovineLovine played the tape for record producer Dr.Dre founder of Aftermath Entertainment. He then release The Slim Shady LP in February 1999. The Marshall Mathers LP was released in May 2000. It sold 1,760,000 copies in its first week, breaking US records held by Snoop Dogg.
Eminem even decided to make "The Eminem Show" which was released in May 2002. It was another success, reaching number one on the charts and selling over 1.332 million copies during its first full week.

His career also got bigger when he decided to create a film in which showed how his career took off and how he actually started to become well known. This film is called "8 Mile" and 8 Mile opened at #1 with $51,240,555 in its opening weekend, then the second highest opening for an R-rated movie in the U.S.The 8 Mile DVD, which was released on March 18, 2003, generated $75 million in sales and rentals in its first week, making it the biggest DVD debut ever for an R-rated movie and putting it in the all-time Top 10 for first week home video sales for a movie.

Eminem also grew his fan base when he started creating songs for the Call of Duty franchise, by doing this he opened up a wider fan base because there are a lot of users online which are huge fans of this franchise.

Eminem worked with the franchise previously, however when his album, "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" was released, the song "Survival" jumped to number 13 in the top charts to promote the multiplayer for the upcoming release of Call of Duty Ghosts.
